Paris Game Recap: Steelers vs. Saints

Bonjour, football. The Steelers win in Paris.

The NFL finally played a regular-season game in France, and the Pittsburgh Steelers made it theirs. They beat the New Orleans Saints 16-10 at the Stade de France in front of 78,488 fans.

It wasn’t pretty. It didn’t have to be. Pittsburgh won it with defense, a 100-yard rusher and a kicker who never missed.

How Pittsburgh won it

Chris Boswell scored the first points in French NFL history with a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter. In the second, DK Metcalf hauled in a 51-yard bomb, and Aaron Rodgers finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown to tight end Darnell Washington. That throw was his 540th career touchdown pass, which moved him past Peyton Manning into third place all time.

The Saints answered on fourth-and-goal, when Tyler Shough hit Devaughn Vele from a yard out to tie it at 10. But Boswell drilled a 47-yarder as the first half ended, then added another field goal late in the third quarter for the final 16-10.

The game was saved on defense. Linebacker Payton Wilson dove to intercept Shough inside the Steelers’ 11-yard line, wiping out what looked like a go-ahead drive. Late in the fourth, Patrick Queen sacked Shough on third down to kill New Orleans’ last real chance.

Top performers

Shough actually threw for more yards than Rodgers, but the Saints couldn’t run at all. New Orleans finished with just 18 rushing yards, while Pittsburgh ran for 150.

Paris passes the test

The Stade de France usually hosts soccer and rugby, but on Sunday it sounded like a Pittsburgh home game. “Here We Go Steelers” chants rang through the stadium during the late defensive stops. Even NFL France got into it, calling Rodgers’ touchdown pass “quel caviar.”

Pittsburgh is quietly becoming the NFL’s world traveler. Last year the Steelers won the league’s first regular-season game in Dublin, and now they own the first one in Paris too. They’re 5-2 with three straight wins and host Cleveland on November 1. The Saints fall to 2-5 and head into their bye week.

Your call

France is the newest stop on the NFL’s growing world tour. So tell me in the comments: should Paris get a game every year, or should the league try somewhere new next?
