Fourth-quarter fix: Knicks beat the Nets

After two straight losses to Philadelphia, the defending champs needed a win. They got one, but they made it interesting. The Knicks trailed the Nets by four after three quarters at Madison Square Garden, then held Brooklyn to 11 points in the fourth and won 103-90.

New York is now 3-4. It’s not the start anyone expected from a team with a brand-new banner, but it’s a step in the right direction.

How the Knicks turned it around

New York led by seven at halftime, but Brooklyn came out hot and won the third quarter 35-24 to take a 79-75 lead. For a moment, it looked like another frustrating night at the Garden.

Then the defense showed up. The Knicks won the fourth quarter 28-11, and the Nets barely scored for long stretches. New York also got hot from deep, making 17 threes on the night.

The surprise star was Landry Shamet. Off the bench, he scored 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting and went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. Karl-Anthony Towns grabbed 16 rebounds, and the Knicks’ bench outscored Brooklyn’s 41-26.

Top performers

Former Knick Julius Randle led Brooklyn with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but he needed 16 shots and couldn’t take over late.

The Knicks host the Bulls on Wednesday, then visit Cleveland on Saturday. So tell me in the comments: is this win the start of a run, or are the champs still searching for themselves?
